Appearance: A short, portly, youthful man. His hair is a mess of reddish-blond curls framing a round, curiously familiar face, a button nose, and bright blue eyes, and a clean-shaven jaw. He leans on a crutch tucked under his left arm to support a crooked leg, and tends to wear slightly ill fitting but well worn clothes.

History: Martin was not raised a man, but he made himself one nevertheless, after years of his youth feeling miserable in his skin and sneakily trying on his father's best britches. His elder sister Heske, ever the dauntless, took it upon herself to see her brother safely away once his mind was fixed to changing his fate, and spun stories of her most favourite cousin while he was remaking himself on a very unusual kind of pilgrimage.

However, with his father's health now rapidly declining and his mother occupied with nursing her husband, Martin has been called home to Northcliff Pass to take over as Landlord- at once a bittersweet fortune and one filled with trepidation.

Personality: Martin is often quiet and softly spoken. Self described as a "man of few words", though Heske protests Martin is simply a little shy and awkward when put on the spot. What he lacks in charisma he makes up for in a warm bearing and a sympathetic ear, though his curiosity and intrigue with other people's lives is sometimes as much for his fascination as his good will.

Martin hopes his ability to gently gloss over the inconsistencies in his story will keep him safe, but he sometimes bends the truth to save someone else's skin or to tell a slightly more interesting tale. His truth-to-flagons of cider graph is a bell curve.

If he could afford it he would be something of a bon vivant, but even within his humble means he is a great believer in the power of good food, good drink, comfortable seats, and excellent company.

Abilities: Lukas muddles along with numbers and most letters for the sake of running the business, but his creativity comes out more in making meals a little more satisfying on feasting days.

He has a relatively strong back, despite his pains, but he is hardly a fighter.

Reputation: Martin claims he was born "around" the village and spent much of his time here as a child. He has recently returned from where he lived in the South to take over as Landlord of the Hammer and Spokes, relieving his apparent uncle and aunt, and working with their eldest daughter, Heske.

The fact that a year ago,the youngest Daffern daughter, Isalde, of around twenty who walked with a cane departed for the South to live with some cousins there- who had hair, eyes, complexion of Martin's colour and a height no shorter than he- is a marvellous coincidence, Heske insists.
